El mes de abril es un mes particular para Salto Grande, significa algo más que un aniversario, es el legado de quienes visionaron, proyectaron y construyeron una obra que marcaría la región.

La idea era la obtención de mayores beneficios de las disposiciones naturales que ofrecen los rápidos del río Uruguay, en la zona de Salto Grande, para el desarrollo regional de ambos países. Esta gran obra comprendía la realización de una represa hidroeléctrica que beneficiara a la Argentina y el Uruguay en partes iguales.
En el año 1946 se firmó el convenio binacional que tiene por objeto “obtener el mayor beneficio de las disposiciones naturales que ofrecen los rápidos del río Uruguay, en la zona de Salto Grande […] aprovechar sus aguas para la producción de energía, y facilitar las comunicaciones terrestres, así como cualquier otro objeto que, sin menoscabo de los anteriores propósitos, concurra al enunciado beneficio común”.
Con el proyecto establecido, se fecha el primer día hábil de abril del año 1974 para dar inicio a una de las obras que es atravesada por más de un siglo de historia.

Nuestro homenaje a quienes, con espíritu emprendedor y visionario, encabezaron los movimientos populares, técnicos y políticos que concibieron y apoyaron la idea de aprovechar las condiciones naturales que ofrecían los rápidos del río Uruguay, para el desarrollo económico, industrial y social de ambos países.
Seguiremos poniendo toda nuestra energía para lograr el desarrollo integral de la región, tal como los gobiernos -y sobre todo- los pueblos quisieron”, declaró el Dr. Carlos Albisu, presidente de la Delegación del Uruguay.

Nació como una idea, se consolidó con apoyo de las fuerzas vivas y fue defendida por éstas cuando estuvo en riesgo; hoy nuestro compromiso es seguir honrando esa historia en pos de poder cumplir cabalmente aquellos principios y valores que dieron el marco para que hoy Salto Grande sea una realidad que seguimos construyendo día a día” manifestó el Ing.
